ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Kiss _ Klimt.jpg

First prize winners of the 2019 Civic Morning Musicals’ Vocal Competition Rachel Doehring, soprano, and Dan Sato, piano, continue their collaboration in an exciting recital debut at Park Central Presbyterian Church in downtown Syracuse on Sunday, January 12th, 2020 at 3pm. Songs of Devotion: Music for the New Year  invites audiences into a musical exploration of our shared experiences, drawing from famous literature, prominent events in the lives of composers, and found and religious texts dating from the eighth century through the Civil War and beyond. The program echoes the rejuvenation proclaimed by the new year and examines the intimate vows we make in moments of overwhelming grief and boundless joy.

Doehring, recently a soloist with the Albany Symphony and a former student of the famed soprano Dawn Upshaw, and Sato, a pianist with Syracuse University and Syracuse Opera, are committed to spreading the joy of music within their own community through this adventurous offering of Mozart, Barber, Ravel, Messiaen, Debussy, Sheila Silver, and others. Dan Sato will perform a rarely seen world-premiere and compositional debut, having impressively arranged Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro, originally written for harp, flute, clarinet, and string quartet, as a solo-piano work.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

RACHEL DOEHRING

Soprano Rachel Doehring, praised by Opera News for her “bright soprano”, is a versatile artist, equally at home performing operatic, concert, recital, and new works. In the 2019 season, her debut as Abigail/Shapeshifter in Experiments in Opera’s world premiere production of Chunky in Heat in New York City was admired as “lithe and agile...absolutely lovable, endearing and wise...remarkable” (Seen and Heard Intl). Recently, she performed with the Albany Symphony as Susanna in scenes from Le Nozze di Figaro at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, and performed the role of Milica in Anna Sokolovic’s Svadba, a Serbian opera written for six women a capella, at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Arts with Bard College Conservatory.

She received first-prize (Helen Boatwright Award) in the Civic Morning Musicals’ 43rd Annual Competition for Singers in Syracuse, NY this fall, and she will make her debut with the Philadelphia Opera Chorus in Verdi’s Requiem in 2020.

In concert, Ms. Doehring has collaborated with a wide variety of artists, ranging from world-renowned pianist Peter Serkin, to the internationally acclaimed percussion ensemble Sō Percussion with Bard College Conservatory Percussion. She has appeared with the Albany Symphony as a soprano soloist in a world premiere by Ben Wallace at the American Music Festival. Other concert highlights include: soprano soloist in Poulenc’s Gloria at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Music Hall (Carnegie Mellon University Philharmonic and Chorus), soprano soloist in Steve Reich’s Daniel Variations (Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble), and premieres of songs by Shawn Jaeger and Alex Wieser at the Morgan Library in New York City. She has appeared in masterclasses with Peter Sellars and Pierre Valet. Her great love of art song, creativity and collaboration inspires her to independently curate and perform recitals year-round.

Doehring is a recent graduate of the Bard College Conservatory Graduate Vocal Arts Program, where she was mentored by the famed soprano Dawn Upshaw (MM ‘18). She earned her BFA with Honors from Carnegie Mellon University in 2016.

DAN SATO

Headshot 3 (1).jpg

Fueled by a mad, yet pure, love for the art of piano-playing, Dr. Dan Sato enjoys a colorful career as a concert artist, scholar, educator, and chamber musician. His passion for repertoire can be seen in his eclectic programs encompassing the canon, neglected and forgotten works, and freshly-born compositions that are rendered with "exuberant spontaneity, deep conviction, and serious compositional understanding.” Even the most avid recital-nappers have commented on their inability to sleep through Dr. Dan's performances, and he owes all such praise and successes to his dear teachers and mentors, including Peter Coraggio, Frank Heneghan, André Watts, Judith Burganger, and Kevin Kenner. Over the years, he has been rewarded with ovations at the New Orleans Piano Institute, Brevard Music Center, Chautauqua Music Festival, Southeast Asia Music Festival, Garth Newel Music Center, ArtsAhimsa, and Taconic Music’s Summer Festival.

Sato began 2019 with a European recital debut presenting the complete Chopin Études in honor of his mentor, Dr. Frank Heneghan. Later that spring, he took part in the critically-acclaimed complete-cycle-performance of George Crumb’s Makrokosmos organized by the Kaleidoscope MusArt Series in Miami, FL. During the summer months, he performed regularly with gifted young cellists at the Perlman Music Program and was invited by Taconic Music to play the rarely-heard Piano Quintet by Vittorio Giannini for their Summer Festival finale. In addition to these appearances, "Deviations", an album of transcriptions for saxophone and piano, was released in collaboration with Dr. Diane Hunger. He also recorded the complete works for cello and piano by Henriette Bosmans with cellist, Leah Plave. The fall of 2019 marked Sato’s first association with Syracuse Opera as both rehearsal pianist and harpsichordist for their production of Mozart's Così fan tutte.
